How does it work?

Uyari is a type of malware that encrypts your files and demands a ransom for the decryption key. This malicious software can spread through email attachments, file-sharing networks, or websites that host infected ads or links. Once the ransomware is installed on your computer, it will scan your hard drive for certain types of files to encrypt. These typically include documents, images, and videos. Uyari will then append the “.encrypted” extension to the end of these files, making them unreadable. A ransom note will appear on your screen, demanding payment to decrypt your files. Also, Uyari may change your desktop wallpaper to display instructions on how to pay the ransom.

Ransom amounts can vary, but Uyari typically demands between 0.5 and 2 Bitcoin (approximately $4000-$16000 at the time of writing). Uyari claims that if you do not pay within 72 hours, the price will double. Uyari also threatens to delete your private key if you attempt to remove the ransomware without paying.

History

It was discovered in May 2019 by malware researcher Jakub Kroustek. It is believed to be a variant of the STOP (DJVU) Ransomware, which has been active since 2016. Uyari shares many characteristics with other STOP variants, including the use of the same file extension and ransom note. However, Uyari uses a unique RSA-2048 encryption key, making it more difficult to decrypt files without paying the ransom.

How can I protect myself?

To protect yourself from Uyari and other types of ransomware, you should take the following precautions:

  • Keep your operating system and software up-to-date with the latest security patches.
  • Use a reputable antivirus program with real-time protection.
  • Avoid opening email attachments from unknown or untrustworthy sources.
  • Do not click on links in emails or messages from unknown or untrustworthy sources.
  • Do not download software or files from websites that you do not trust.
  • Back up your important files regularly to an external drive or cloud storage service.

What should you do?

If you have ransomware on your computer, it is important not to pay the ransom. There is no guarantee that you will get the decryption key even if you do pay, and you may just be lining the pockets of the cybercriminals responsible for this malware. Instead, try using a reputable anti-malware program to remove it from your system and then attempt to restore your files from a backup.

But if you don’t have a backup, some file recovery methods might be able to help you get your data back, but these methods are not guaranteed to work and can be quite technical. So, if you’re not comfortable using them, it’s best to seek professional help.
