Pr0tector is a type of malware that encrypts your files and demands a ransom to decrypt them. It is believed to be a variant of the Crysis/Dharma Ransomware Family. Attackers spread Pr0tector through email attachments, malicious websites, or by other malware that is already present on your computer. Pr0tector will add the “.pr0” extension to the end of each file name. For example, “sample.jpg” would become “sample.jpg.pr0”. Then, Pr0tector will display a ransom note that contains instructions on how to pay the ransom and decrypt files.

Ransom payment instructions:

The ransom note will be displayed in a text file named “PROTECTOR-README.txt” and will be located in each folder that contains encrypted files.

The ransom note contains the following text:

All your documents, photos, databases, and other important files have been encrypted!

To decrypt your files, you need to buy the special software – Pr0tector Decrypter.

Please write us to the e-mail [email protected] or [email protected]

You have to pay for decryption in Bitcoins. The price depends on how fast you write to us.

After payment, we will send you the decryption tool that will decrypt all your files.

Free decryption as a guarantee

Before paying, you can send us up to 3 files for free decryption. The total size of files must be less than 5Mb (non-archived), and files should not contain valuable information. (databases, backups, large excel sheets, etc.)

How to buy Bitcoins?

The easiest way to buy bitcoins is the LocalBitcoins site. You can find there offers from many people who are willing to sell bitcoins for cash deposited into their bank account.

Also, you can find various exchanges where you can buy bitcoins for dollars, rubles, and other currencies.

Attention!

Do not rename encrypted files.

Do not try to decrypt your data using third-party software, it may cause permanent data loss.

Decryption of your files with the help of third parties may cause increased price (they add their fee to our) or you can become a victim of a scam.

How much is the ransom?

The Pr0tector Ransomware ransom is variable and depends on how quickly you contact the attackers. The ransom note states that the price starts at 0.5 Bitcoin, but there is no evidence to support this claim.

Prevention

To help prevent Pr0tector or other ransomware from infecting your computer, you should:

  • use a reputable anti-malware program and keep it up-to-date.
  • avoid opening email attachments from unknown senders.
  • be cautious when downloading files from the Internet.

What should I do?

You should not pay the ransom. There is no guarantee that you will receive the decryption key even if you do pay the ransom. Instead, you should focus on Pr0tector Ransomware removal and then use a reliable data recovery program to try to recover your files.
