Maktub Locker Ransomware is a piece of malware that locks your computer and encrypts your files. It then demands a ransom for you to regain access to your computer and your data.
History
It was first discovered in November 2016. It is believed to have been created by a Russian cybercrime group known as Evil Corp. Maktub Locker is part of a family of ransomware known as Dridex, which is notorious for being used in large-scale attacks such as the one against Bangladesh’s central bank.
How does Maktub Locker work?
Attackers typically spread Maktub Locker Ransomware through phishing emails that contain malicious attachments or links. Once the email is opened and the attachment or link is clicked, Maktub Locker Ransomware will be downloaded and installed on the victim’s computer. Maktub Locker Ransomware will then scan the victim’s computer for certain file types and encrypt them using AES-256 encryption. Maktub Locker Ransomware will then display a ransom note on the victim’s desktop that demands a payment to decrypt the files. This ransomware will also delete any shadow copies that are present on the victim’s computer, making it more difficult to recover the encrypted files.
What types of files does Maktub Locker encrypt?
It typically targets the following types of files:
-Documents
-Images
-Videos
-Audio files
-Database files
-Backup files
Protection
To protect yourself from Maktub Locker Ransomware, you should always be suspicious of unsolicited emails, especially those that contain attachments or links. You should never open an attachment or click on a link from an email unless you are absolutely sure that it is safe. You should also have a reliable antivirus program installed on your computer and make sure that it is always up to date.
How much is the ransom?
The ransom demanded by Maktub Locker Ransomware is typically 2 Bitcoin, but it can vary depending on the individual case.
Maktub Locker Ransomware will give the victim a deadline to pay the ransom, and if the ransom is not paid by the deadline, the price will double. Maktub Locker will also threaten to delete the encryption key if you do not pay the ransom within a certain amount of time, making it impossible to decrypt the files.
Should you pay the ransom?
Paying the ransom is not recommended as it does not guarantee that you will get your files back. In addition, by paying the ransom, you are supporting the operations of Evil Corp and other cybercrime groups.
How can you remove Maktub Locker Ransomware?
We do not recommend that you try to remove Maktub Locker yourself, as it can be extremely difficult to do so and you run the risk of damaging your computer. Instead, we recommend that you use a reputable anti-malware program to remove Maktub Locker Ransomware for you.
Is there a public decryption tool?
There is no public decryption tool for Maktub Locker Ransomware at this time.
How to recover Maktub Locker encrypted files?
Once Maktub Locker Ransomware has been removed, you can then try to use a data recovery program to recover your files. However, we cannot guarantee that this will work as Maktub Locker Ransomware deletes shadow copies from the computer, making it more difficult to recover the files.
You can also try to restore your files from a backup if you have one. Maktub Locker Ransomware will not be able to encrypt any files that are stored on an external hard drive or cloud storage.
Contact a data recovery service
The best way to recover Maktub Locker encrypted files is to contact a data recovery service. Data recovery services can decrypt Maktub Locker Ransomware files without having to pay the ransom. In addition, data recovery services have a higher success rate than using a data recovery program.
