What is Lortok Ransomware?

Lortok is a type of malicious software that encrypts your files and demands a ransom for the decryption key. Lortok is a new ransomware variant that was first discovered in mid-April 2019. This malware is particularly dangerous as it uses strong encryption algorithms, which make it very difficult to decrypt your files without the ransom key.

How does Lortok work?

It uses a sophisticated encryption algorithm to encrypt your files. Once it has encrypted your files, it will display a ransom note on your screen, demanding a payment of 2 Bitcoin for the decryption key. After the ransomware has encrypted your files, it will have the .Lortok extension added to the end of each filename. For example, a file called ‘sample.jpg’ would become ‘sample.jpg.Lortok’. This ransomware will also delete your shadow copies, so you cannot use this method to restore your files.

What encryption methods does Lortok use?

It uses the AES-256 and RSA-2048 encryption algorithms.

How does it spread?

Attackers spread Lortok through malicious email attachments and websites. They can also spread it through infected removable devices, such as USB drives.

What types of files does Lortok encrypt?

This ransomware will encrypt a wide variety of files, including images, videos, documents, and more.

What was the biggest Lortok Ransomware attack?

The biggest Lortok ransomware attack occurred in May 2019, when the malware encrypted the files of a hospital in Düsseldorf, Germany. The hospital was forced to pay the ransom and had to cancel appointments and operations as a result.

Protection

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from Lortok and other types of ransomware. Firstly, you should always have a backup of your files. This way, if your files are encrypted, you can restore them:

1) Use a reputable antivirus program and keep it up-to-date.

2) Avoid opening email attachments from unknown senders.

3) Do not download programs from untrustworthy websites.

4) Use a reliable backup program to regularly backup your important files. This way, if you do become a victim of Lortok, you will be able to restore your files from the backup.

What should I do?

If attackers have infected you with Lortok ransomware, the first thing you should do is disconnect your computer from the Internet to prevent the malware from encrypting any more files.

You should not pay the ransom, as there is no guarantee that you will receive the decryption key. Furthermore, by paying the ransom, you are supporting the attackers and encouraging them to continue their malicious activities.

How can I remove Lortok?

If you have Lortok ransomware, it is important to remove it from your computer as soon as possible. You should use a reputable anti-malware program to remove it from your computer. Lortok is a very dangerous malware, and it is not recommended that you try to remove it manually.

How can I restore my files?

The best thing to do is to restore your files from a backup. If you do not have a backup, you may be able to use a file recovery program to recover some of your files.
