What is Locked-In Ransomware?

Locked-In is a virus that encrypts your files and holds them for ransom until you pay a fee to the attackers. This type of ransomware is hazardous because it not only encrypts your files but also locks you out of your computer, making it impossible to access your data.

How does Locked-In Ransomware spread?

It typically spreads through email attachments or malicious websites.

History

Locked-In was first discovered in 2016. It is a variant of Locky Ransomware.

How do I know if I am infected with Locked-In Ransomware?

If you are infected with Locked-In Ransomware, you will see a message on your screen that says your files have been locked. Also, you will not be able to access your computer.

How can you protect yourself from Locked-In Ransomware?

There is no guaranteed way to protect yourself from this or any other ransomware attack, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk:

  • Keep your antivirus software up to date
  • Don’t open email attachments from unknown senders
  • Avoid clicking on links in suspicious emails
  • Don’t download software from untrustworthy websites

How much is the ransom?

The ransom demanded by Locked-In Ransomware varies, depending on the victim. In some cases, the attackers may require a few hundred dollars, while others may demand thousands.

Also, the attackers will threaten to delete your data or release it publicly if you do not pay the ransom within a specific time frame.

What should you do?

We do not recommend paying the ransom, as there is no guarantee that you will get your data back even if you do pay. Additionally, paying the ransom only encourages the attackers and helps them fund future attacks.

Public decryption tool

If they infected you with Locked-In Ransomware, you can check if a public decryption tool is available. These tools are created by security researchers and can be used to decrypt your files for free. However, they are not always available for every type of ransomware.

Unfortunately, there is no public decryption tool available for Locked-In Ransomware at this time.

How to remove Locked-In Ransomware?

You should use a reputable anti-malware program to remove it from your computer. We recommend using Malwarebytes.

How to restore your files?

Once the ransomware has been removed, you can then restore your data from a backup. This is the best way to recover your data.

To restore your files from a backup:

  1. Disconnect your computer from the internet to prevent the ransomware from encrypting your backups.
  2. Restore your files from the backup.
  3. Once you have restored your files, connect your computer to the internet and scan it with an antivirus program to remove any remaining malware.

If you do not have a backup, you may be able to use data recovery software. We built SalvageData data recovery software to help you recover your files.

Contact a data recovery service

If you are not able to remove this virus yourself, you can contact a data recovery service.

Be aware that some data recovery services may be scams. Before you pay anything, make sure you do your research and only use a reputable service.
