What is CerberTear?

CerberTear is ransomware that was first discovered in May 2017. This ransomware will encrypt your files and then demand a ransom be paid to get the decryption key. CerberTear uses the AES-256 encryption algorithm.

What is the difference between CerberTear and other Ransomware?

CerberTear is unique in that it uses the Tor network to communicate with its victims. This makes it difficult for authorities to track down the CerberTear operators. CerberTear is also unique in that it allows victims to choose from a variety of payment methods, including Bitcoin, Perfect Money, or Monero.

What are the symptoms of CerberTear infection?

The most common symptom of CerberTear infection is the encryption of your files. CerberTear will append the “.cerberus” extension to encrypted files. CerberTear will also drop a text file named “DECRYPT_INSTRUCTIONS.txt” which contains instructions on how to pay the ransom and decrypt your files.

What types of files does CerberTear encrypt?

CerberTear encrypts a variety of files types, including: .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .pdf, .jpg, .jpeg, and more.

How much is the ransom?

The CerberTear ransom is typically 1 Bitcoin. However, the CerberTear operators may be willing to negotiate the ransom amount.

Protection

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself from CerberTear and other ransomware:

1) Use a reputable antivirus program and keep it up-to-date.

2) Avoid opening email attachments from unknown senders.

3) Do not click on links in emails from unknown senders.

4) Enable popup blockers in your web browser.

5) Install ad-blocking software in your web browser.

6) Back up your files regularly. This way, if you do become infected with CerberTear, you will not lose your data.

I am infected with CerberTear. What should I do?

There are a few things you can do if it infected you with CerberTear:

– Do not pay the ransom. This does not guarantee that you will get your files back.

– Use a reputable anti-virus/anti-malware program to remove CerberTear from your computer.
