The Federal Information Processing Standard, aka FIPS, is the U.S. government security standard that describes the encryption and security requirements for IT products destined mainly for sensitive data.
FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 storage devices should comply with high standards of security so, even in case of a damaged or stolen drive, the data on it is still protected and the information stored is not compromised.
WHICH ARE THE FIPS 140-2 AND FIPS 140-3 LEVELS?
FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 define four levels of security. Each level defines which security measure the device must-have.
You can check at the NIST official website if your storage device has a validated encryption module.
Level 4 FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 self-encrypted storage devices have advanced tamper protection. It’s designed for sensitive data on devices at physically unprotected workplaces.
