My Experience with the TRC in Lawrence, Kansas – A Cry for Help That Went Unanswered I have come to the Treatment and Recovery Center (TRC) near the hospital in Lawrence, Kansas on three separate occasions, each time in a moment of genuine crisis, seeking help, stability, and understanding. But despite my efforts, I was never once permitted to make it past the front area into the actual unit—never once given the services I was desperately trying to access. The first time, I was told the unit was full. I sat in the lobby, hoping for some relief, but I personally saw four individuals arrive after me and walk back into the unit with no delay. When I asked again for help, a female staff member told me I could sleep in my car in the TRC parking lot and return the following morning when a bed might open. Trusting her word, I parked my car and tried to settle in for the night. But just hours later, a security guard knocked on my window and told me I had to leave. I pleaded with him, explained that I had been given permission, but he dismissed me without listening. That night, after being turned away yet again, I relapsed on fentanyl. I had come seeking support and safety—but instead, I was pushed further into danger and despair. The second time I returned, I was told a bed was available. I thought things would finally change. But the staff were openly rude and dismissive, especially one woman—blonde, attractive, and unrelentingly hostile. She refused to administer my prescribed medications and came across as deeply judgmental and even misandrist in her behavior. I was denied basic dignity and compassion at a place that claims to be a center for recovery. The third time I came, I brought with me $80 worth of unopened, non-GMO food from a Whole Foods retailer. I was in a fragile mental state, and my car had broken down. I couldn’t leave the food behind to spoil, and I was under the impression they would help preserve it. Staff agreed to admit me but insisted I first go to the hospital due to my Suboxone prescription. I cooperated. I even warned the counselor, who claimed to have a LADAC or LPCC/S credential, that my thoughts were graphic and overwhelming, so they would understand the level of care I required. Yet once at the hospital, they took my phone and clothing, administered an IM injection of 20mg Geodon—only at my request—and then kept me in the dark about whether I’d be returned to the Crisis Unit. I fell asleep hoping for answers. When I woke up and requested discharge—since I hadn’t made any direct threat to harm myself or others—I was released. Returning to the TRC to at least retrieve my food, I was told no one knew anything about it. No one took responsibility. No one cared. I left empty-handed. Still homeless, still in crisis, and now feeling even more alienated and defeated than before. I lost my home on September 27, 2024, when Hurricane Helene (later classified as a tropical storm) destroyed everything I owned. Since then, I’ve been trying to hold it together. Bert Nash and the TRC may offer help to many people, but I am living proof that the system doesn't work for everyone. Despite showing up, despite being honest and vulnerable, I was denied access, dismissed, humiliated, and retraumatized. I wasn’t treated as a person in pain—I was treated as a problem to be turned away. My story deserves to be heard, and this system must be held accountable for the lives it fails to protect.

I recently checked myself into the TRC because I was having a horrible depressive episode. The staff were all very kind and accommodating and I am appreciative that they were focused on getting me back to normalcy and helping connect me to the resources that I need to recover. I'm sure that some people have a different experience as not everyone checks themselves in, but they really do try to make it a safe environment to get better. This is a much-needed service to the community of Lawrence and the staff really does care.

I am the director of an IDD residential program, and we went in needing help for an individual in an active crisis. They unfortunately were turned away. I am very disappointed in our experience. I have heard great things about TRC, but left feeling defeated and helpless for my individual.

I was so grateful to this facility in a time of need after I lost my Dad. I had a therapist and a mental health provider already, but on a Saturday morning during my first and only panic attack the TRC is what I had available. The staff let me know there would be a wait. The therapist really validated my feelings and experience and helped me ease the embarrassment I had in not being able to control my situation myself. The nurse practitioner was able to get a plan in place until I was able to get follow up with my primary team. I felt so normalized and supported and and this experience helped me manage my grief.

I've had plenty of experiences ranging from traumatic to healing at quite a few different psych facilities over the past decade as I've struggled on and off with my mental health long term. This is one of the better ones. This was an "in between" sort of solution for me where they wouldn't keep me for over 3 days and I wouldn't leave with a bill in the multiple thousands like I have before. The staff here was empathetic and did really seem to make an effort to understand me and respect my and other patients' autonomy as much as possible, from the support staff to the psychiatrist. They seemed well-versed in trauma responses and dissociation. That said, I'm relatively privileged to be able to express and communicate my needs and self-advocate in a way many of the clientele here may not. So my positive experience doesn't necessarily negate anyone's negative one. It is still, of course, a psych unit - there are restrictions to keep people safe that could make some people feel understandably controlled or upset and they're subject to psychiatric standards and regulations that are larger-scale than this facility alone. However if you're in a crisis and really need a place to be safe, supported, and calm down for a few days I'd recommend this place. It's also extremely affordable compared to other facilities, especially if you're a low income Douglas County resident (out of county residents aren't eligible for the sliding scale but it still is a fraction of the cost of a standard psych hospital). I didn't like the observation room as it's just one large room where all the patients are sat in rows of reclining chairs which felt exposed/vulnerable to me, but they also had more private rooms available upon request. My main suggestion is I would really like to see more group activities to keep people engaged. Of course, that takes quite a bit of funding to have enough staff. Trying to come down from a crisis while lost in your thoughts and bored/lonely is tough. Overall thank you to this place and its people for making what would have been a terrible time a little more bearable for me.
