When facing data loss from a damaged or deleted partition, your actions in the first few minutes after discovering the issue can mean the difference between a successful recovery and permanent data loss.

A partition is a logical division of a storage device, such as a hard drive or solid-state drive, that allows the operating system to treat each segment as a separate volume. This enables better data organization and management. When a partition is deleted, all data stored on it becomes inaccessible, though it may still physically exist on the disk until overwritten by new data. The operating system will mark that space as available for new data, effectively removing its logical structure without immediately erasing the underlying information. However, every write operation to the drive risks overwriting your valuable information.

  • The first 30 minutes are critical for preventing additional damage
  • Continued use of the drive can overwrite recoverable data
  • Professional evaluation should be sought if you're unsure about the severity
  • Using the wrong recovery method can make data permanently unrecoverable

How partitions can become damaged

You can lose your partition data by accidentally deleting it, but it can also become damaged or corrupted, preventing you from accessing its files.

  • Virus and malware: External drives are used extensively to transfer data between devices, which makes them more prone to corruption and data loss caused by malicious software infection.
  • Improper use: When the external drive is unplugged suddenly and without safe removal, it can end up with partition corruption or loss.
  • Accidental formatting: Another common reason for data loss is accidentally deleting or formatting the drive.
  • Power issues: Power failure or outages can result in logical errors, which can lead to data loss.
  • Physical damage: Accidental falls, water, or fire can easily damage storage devices, potentially making data partially or entirely impossible to recover.
  • Wear and tear: Devices have a natural life span that can decrease if used incorrectly. When the storage device is about to fail, the data can become corrupted or even disappear.

How to recover a lost or deleted partition

DIY repairs are likely the first thing you think of when seeking ways to retrieve lost files, but they can have unpredictable consequences, including rendering your data unrecoverable.

To determine your best course of action, answer these questions:

  1. Can you still see the drive in Windows?
  2. Is the drive making unusual sounds?
    • Yes → STOP immediately and seek professional help
    • No → Continue to the next question
  3. Has the drive been reformatted or repartitioned?
    • Yes → Professional recovery recommended
    • No → Free software may work
  4. Is this data business-critical or irreplaceable?
    • Yes → Professional recovery recommended
    • No → Try free solutions first

If you still want to take a chance, follow these safety precautions:

Do not:

  • Format the drive
  • Create new partitions
  • Run CHKDSK without professional advice
  • Install software on the affected drive

Common error messages and solutions:

Run a CHKDSK scan

As the drive partition might’ve turned your drive RAW due to malware infection, sudden power failure, and so forth, you first need to run a CHKDSK Scan.

Step 1: Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.

Step 2: Type chkdsk X: /f /r (replace X with your drive letter) and press Enter.

The /f switch tells CHKDSK to fix errors it finds, while /r locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.
Step 3: Reboot your computer. If it is an external drive, safely remove it before restarting.

Run the ‘attrib’ command

If you see executable shortcuts in your drive, you can use the attrib command to retrieve their hidden data.

Step 1: Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.

Step 2:  Type each of the following commands and hit the Enter button:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>X:

X:\>attrib *.* -h -s /s /d

X:\>

Replace X with your drive letter.

Step 3: Once the command is executed, the shortcuts will disappear, and you will be able to access the missing data.

Use Diskpart to retrieve the lost partition

To recover the deleted partition, follow these steps using the Disk Management tool and the Command Prompt (CMD).

Step 1: Press the Windows + R keys to open Run and type diskmgmt.msc.

Step 2: Find the desired partition and remember its size. Generally, the deleted partition should be marked as Unallocated.

Step 3: Next, input cmd in the search box and run as an administrator. Type diskpart there, and press Enter.

Step 4: After that, type the following commands as mentioned and then press the Enter key once again:

list disk

select disk x

list volume

select volume y

assign letter=z

Replace x with the disk letter that contains the deleted partition.

Replace y with the number of the lost partition.

Replace z with a letter that has not been used in the list before

Step 5: Exit the window and check if Diskpart has restored the deleted partition.

When to contact data recovery services

Data recovery services are crucial when users experience partition loss or deletion, especially when DIY recovery methods prove insufficient or risky. Professional data recovery becomes essential when valuable personal or business data is trapped in inaccessible partitions, as these specialists possess advanced tools, cleanroom facilities, and expertise that go far beyond consumer-grade recovery software.

Several critical scenarios exist in which professional data recovery services are the only viable option for retrieving data from deleted or damaged partitions:

  • Physical drive damage requiring cleanroom work
  • Severe partition table corruption affecting multiple drives
  • Failed RAID arrays with multiple drive failures
  • Encrypted drive failures with damaged boot sectors
  • Virtual machine corruption with damaged partition structures
  • NAS system failures with proprietary file systems

The success of partition recovery largely depends on stopping further drive use immediately after data loss and promptly engaging professional services. Professional recovery services not only have the technical capabilities to handle these situations but also maintain proper documentation and chain of custody procedures, which can be crucial for legal or business requirements.
