As industry experts we know that most standard file deletion procedures will not securely remove the data stored on the drive or media, experts in data recovery are often able to recover part or all of previously deleted data. Data remanence is residual data that remains on the drive after attempts to erase the data have been completed. Often, bits or entire files are left intact by file deletion or reformatting of storage media. Unsecure file deletion can result in the disclosure of confidential or sensitive information to a third party should the storage media be discarded and later reclaimed (often by dumpster divers).

SalvageData uses Department of Defense standard data erasure procedures, including: degaussing, overwriting, and physical destruction of the storage media rendering the media unrecoverable. Data purging ensures that the data on your storage media cannot be recovered even by laboratory recovery techniques like those used in SalvageData's data recovery service. We strongly recommend that any hard disk that has ever contained sensitive or confidential information be physically mailed to SalvageData for a secure data erasure. After purging the drive, we can also destroy the hard disk using appropriate destruction methods.

We use the media sanitation standards published by the Department of Defense for the purging of classified data. The NISP Operating Manual, DoD 5220.22-M, establishes the procedures and requirements for the secure erasure of data. It was most recently updated in 2006 to include sanitation instructions for new and emerging storage media, including holographic storage and molecular memory. The manual describes two main options in the sanitation of data: purging and destroying.
